The PMD

The position of Producer of Marketing and Distribution originates from the movie industry of the United States, which is known for its innovation and dynamics in the area of marketing and distribution.

The production of a movie and its M&D used to be separate processes. The filmmakers shot a movie, and then the marketing and distribution team took over. But the rise of new media forced the film industry to recognize and explore the possibilities to begin with marketing and distribution even before the first shooting day and try to create a buzz. A new position was added to the production team, one person who is devoted to the marketing and distribution of a film from inception: the PMD. He is not responsible for the physical production of the movie, but initiates the marketing of it and functions as a connection between producer, distributor and financers.

The PMD, in short, is at the very center of the intricate web that a movie production is. He supervises all M&D from the very beginning of the project, makes sure that everything that needs to be done is done, and that everyone who needs to perform a certain task, performs it. The PMD coordinates and stimulates other people and makes them work as a team.
